Although they are the smallest of birds, there are more than 300 types of hummingbirds. When you want to refer to this bird, it is always good to know the genus and species name to prevent a mix-up with similar names. BirdEden gives you a comprehensive list of the different varieties of hummingbirds with pictures.
Some Astonishing Facts!
1. A hummingbird’s brain is 4.2% of its weight, which is the largest proportion in the bird kingdom. It is so smart that it can remember which flower it has been to.
2. It has no sense of smell, but its eyesight and hearing ability is far better than humans.
Hummingbirds are among the smallest of birds. They are known for the humming sound their wings make while flying. They are the only birds that can fly backwards. They have to eat a lot, but their metabolism is the highest (which shows in their small size). They are known to have a lifespan of 5 years, but many die in their first year only. Due to their small size, these are the only ones that face danger from insects. A praying mantis can feed on a hummingbird.
Some species of hummingbirds may be extinct, many are endangered too, and others are found in abundance. We have listed some common hummingbirds in the beginning, and the remaining list of species follows soon after.
